"Thirty years later rappers have become rock stars, movie stars, leaders, educators, philanthropists, even CEOs. None of this would have been possible without the work of these men." - Jay Z speaking at the Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction

Cindy Campbell decided to throw a back to school party in the Bronx on August 11, 1973. Her big brother, DJ Kool Herc, extended the break beats and rocked the jam packed crowd. DJ Kool Herc could not contain the party inside for long so he decided to move the party outside starting the first Hip-Hop Block Party. Finally, DJ Kool Herc moved the party down the street to the park and thousands came in droves in the darkness of night to see the first Hip-Hop Park Jam. DJ Kool Herc hot wired a light pole for juice to power up his legendary Herculoid speakers and rocked the borough. Hip-Hop was born!

One DJ, two turn tables; that's the only things necessary to get a party rocking. Kool Herc, the father of Hip-Hop put those products together and history was made right there in a small recreation center in the Bronx in 1973. He did not realize he was sparking a new genre of music, he just wanted to keep people partying.
