Scratch DJ Academy Celebrates 10th Anniversary & Jam Master Jay

The legacy of Jam Master Jay was honored at Scratch DJ Academy’s 10th anniversary party at the Canal Room. A-Trak, one of the East Village institution’s original instructors, was also honored Tuesday night and he stood with the late Jam Master Jay’s son, TJ Mizell, to watch a video honoring Jay. The event marked a milestone for Scratch, the world’s first DJ school, co-founded by Rob Principe and Jay. There were performances from Jam Master Jay’s fellow hip-hop group member Darryl “D.M.C.” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C., who spun classics including “It’s Tricky” and “Walk This Way.” Jay’s widow, Terri Mizell, thanked the crowd on behalf of her husband. DJ QBert and DJ Kool Herc, both affiliates of Scratch, also accepted awards. Those gathered to hear the music included Kenny Santucci, Evan Starkman, producer Baby Paul and Scratch’s Dan Martinez.
