The hip-hop star said President Barack Obama did the "right thing" last week when he announced that gay couples should be able to marry.

"What people do in their own homes is their business," he said in an interview with CNN on Monday. "You choose to love whoever you love. That "s their business."

The Brooklyn-born rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, called opposition to marriage rights for same-sex couples "discrimination."

"It "s no different than discriminating against blacks," he added. "It "s discrimination, plain and simple."

Since supporting gay marriage in an interview with ABC News last week, Obama has brought up the issue in other appearances.

At an LGBT fundraiser in Chelsea on Monday hosted by Ricky Martin, Obama said, "I want everybody treated fairly in this country."

"We have never gone wrong when we have expanded rights and to everybody," he added. "That doesn "t weaken families - that strengthens families."

During an appearance on "The View" Tuesday, Obama also repeated his opposition to the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between a man and a woman.

"We don "t think it "s constitutional," Obama said.

A new poll showed that Obama "s support of gay marriage didn "t hurt - or help - Americans " opinions of him. Overall, about 31% of people polled said they saw Obama more favorably, and 30% said they viewed him less favorably, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Tuesday. The rest said it didn "t impact their view of Obama.

Jay-Z said he believed Obama made the decision regardless of November "s presidential election against presumptive GOP rival Mitt Romney, who says he opposes gay marriage.
