My name is DJ Lady Love, I was born and raised in the Bronx. My family moved around a lot until we settled in Queens when I was 13.. Growing up my older cousins were DJ’s I used to wash dishes and clean their apartment just to get some time on their tables, but they were disco DJ’s they didn’t even own 2 copies of the same record. I was not a very sociable child I didn’t have many friends I was more into reading and my music. One day I was invited to his basement party, as I walked down the dark basement steps I saw a light coming from the corner ,and this guy was doing but not the way I had ever seen it done, he had the same record on each turntable and was moving back and forth between the beats, I was amazed that guy Was Davy D, now known as Davy DMX..I stood right in front of him all night I didn’t move. When the party was over I waited for my chance I went up to him and told him I wanted to do that, he said ok come over my house tomorrow and I will teach you. I was at Dave’s house sitting outside the next day. The first song he taught me how to Cut was Apache. The name of Dave’s crew was Solo sounds, which consisted of Davy, Hurricane, Kool T, Kippi o and Butterfly(RIP) and Les Love from Yonkers, some of the members later on became the group The Afro’s, During my time with them my name was DJ Sexy, I was there night and day waiting for Dave to take a break so I could get on for whatever time I had, Around this time I started expanding my horizons checking out different spots in Queen, The Fantasia, Le Chalet, Olympia palace to name a few, I became a fixture at park jams anywhere there was the music, I became friends with a DJ/MC by the name of Wood Wood he was a fixture at the fantasia, Woody said he liked my style but not my name, He said if I came up with a new name he would put me on at The Fantasia, So we were in the fantasias office trying to come up with a name, nothing fit, So we went outside and as we stepped out the door a bout on the back of a truck was going down Merrick Blvd, the name of the boat was Lady Love, woody said that was a sign and that’s how I got my name. Woody was true to his word, He put me on my first flyer, I went to John Adams so I went up there and handed out flyers all over the school, on the night of the jam I was so nervous I had never played in front of a crowd before, So when I looked out all I saw was peeps from my school my hands were shaking and I cut the record to fast that the needle went flying across the record, but I didn’t stop I kept going and by the time I was through I had them rocking, That in turn lead me to be able to play with Infinity Machine. I was a fiend though when I heard of the disco twins in Astoria I was over there hanging with them learning more and more, Sesame took me under his wings and taught me more, I would cook for them waiting for my turn to get on, The Twins had an award show at The Roosevelt skating ring around 1981, I was voted number one female DJ I got a trphy and everything. It was then that I met Afrika Bambatta and DJ Jazzy J, after Bambatta heard me play he invited me to the T-Connection to play, I went the next week, hahaha,. I played at the T-connection a couple of times..I was expanding my horizons playing park jams and everything bouncing between the Bronx and Queens, The biggest event for me was when we played the Armory in Jamaica Queens, we rode in limo’s straight into the place, I was in a whole new world..I can’t even remember all the places I played, but I began seeing my name on flyers everywhere, ,Sweety G even had me on one of his flyers. The only out of state venue I played at was The Hartford Civic Center one Easter, Kurtis Blow, Funky Four, Spoonie G it was the biggest show for me, but I didn’t have a MC, Some of us rode a charted bus up there and on the bus was Spoonie G and he treacherous 3, they said they had heard me and like my style, I told them I didn’t have an MC so Special K said He would MC for me, It turns out not only did he do it, ,but so did Divine and Disco Kid, The recording of that night is a classic, It was also the first time I was asked for my autograph, It was an amazing show.. I played at different event after that, But as a female it was hard, People didn’t wanna pay me, or put me on flyers that I had no Idea about I slowly started leaving it behind. Now 30 some odd years I am back, kids are grown and it’s me time I have a lot of projects in the works. I want to represent for the true school and classic genre of Hip Hop and just continue to play my music wherever there are people who want to hear it..
